Editor's note

Johnson was a member of the famous 10th Mountain Division, the country's first unit of ski troops. Trained to fight in harsh mountainous conditions, The Tenth Mountain was shipped to fight in the Mediterranean theater at the end of 1944. In four months of fighting in some of the toughest terrain of the Second World War, the division had one of the highest casualty rates.
