There are basically two types of electric bicyles: pedal-assist and throttle-controlled.  Both have electric motors that help drive the rear wheel.

Electric bikes have been around since the 1980s, when they were introduced in Japan to make riding easier for the elderly. From there, they spread throughout Asia and Europe, where they have been widely accepted, and are now starting to make headway in the United States.
