Notes from a Naturalist: Fireflies

With the recent arrival of the summer solstice, life has reached its nadir. The daylight at its most plentiful, the hot and sultry days give way to short and warm nights. Everything is in a state of regeneration, birds sit on eggs in secret spots, and spring frog songs have segued into the summer bellows of bullfrogs and the melodious short trills of gray tree frogs.
