Statler and Waldorf

The Muppets' Statler and Waldorf are notorious for hilariously cutting all around them down to size. Less funny is a growing breed of contranian film critics who not only attack popular films, but belittle their audience. (COURTESY OF DISNEY)

As a regular writer and reader of film criticism, I’ve noticed a rise in what could be called the film contrarian, those critics who seemingly take pleasure in going against the perceived consensus on a film.

There’s nothing wrong with having a negative opinion of a popular film, but we can blame aggregator websites like Rotten Tomatoes for creating critics who feel compelled to validate their opinions by discrediting others with such phrases as “so-called critics.”
