Umbrella Academy

Netflix's latest venture into the superhero genre is an adaptation of Gerard Way's "The Umbrella Academy." (COURTESY OF NETFLIX)

With the drastic increase of comic book adaptations in the past decade, they’ve started to all become very similar to one another. In an overcrowded genre, the 10-episode Netflix Original Series “The Umbrella Academy” stands out from the other comic-book adaptations on the CW (“Arrow,” “Flash”) and Netflix (“Daredevil,” “The Punisher”).

Other than a few flaws here and there, “Umbrella Academy,” based on a comic created by Gerard Way of the band My Chemical Romance, is a faithful adaptation that blends many different genres and styles, features fleshed-out, compelling characters and avoiding most superhero cliches.
