September is a week away, and with it comes the first day of school. The freedom of summer’s schedule suddenly evaporates, but there is high excitement, new clothes and supplies for the launch.

For me, who spent 20 years overseeing an elementary school office, it is a bittersweet time. I still miss the steady stream of young people coming and going. But that vacuum has been filled by my own grandchildren, still in my favorite age range of 7 and under.
