The seasons shifted early in the week, with 70-degree days serving as a punctuation mark after sweltering heat. No one needs reminding that August came in like a blast furnace, with 10 of the first 12 days delivering temperatures in the 80s and 90s. It was unrelenting, but the long-range forecast is for more bearable temperatures.
In the meantime, all indicators point to the fact that the seasons are in transition. Sunrise is just shy of 6 a.m., and the woods are largely quiet as the bird population moves from breeding behaviors to preparing for the trek south. And however lovely twilight might be, darkness descends abruptly and it is fully dark by 8:30.
