FRYEBURG — Calling all young boys and girls basketball players — if you'd like to work on your skills and improve your court savvy, a pair of basketball camps are being offered this summer. Fryeburg Academy boys' coach Sedge Saunders is once again running a camp, the Fryeburg Academy Basketball Camp (formerly known as the ABA Basketball Camp) with the first week at the new Rec Center at the Field of Dreams complex and the second at Wadsworth Arena on the campus of Fryeburg Academy.

There are two sessions this summer for girls and boys entering grades three through eight, starting Monday and running through Friday, June 17-21 at Fryeburg Rec Center, and June 24-28 in the Wadsworth Gymnasium, all from 9 a.m. to noon.

"We will take kids going into the second grade if parents just check with me first," Saunders said. "(Laughing) We're opening the camp up to kids all over the globe. We'd love to have kids from all over come out and participate. We'll be concentrating on the fundamentals, proper mechanics and skills of the game of basketball."

Saunders is excited to bring the camp to the rec center for the first week.

Coach Saunders is currently in his 21st year as the varsity boys' basketball coach at Fryeburg Academy. He is a graduate of Babson College where he played basketball and baseball. Saunders was selected as Class A Coach of the Year by his peers in 2018. He was also was chosen to coach the annual Maine MacDonald's House All-Star Game between the top players from Classes AA, A and B South, against the host North stars on the campus of Husson College in Bangor, Maine.

Saunders said a number Fryeburg Academy basketball players will be helping out at the camp.

The cost of the camp is $50 for a week or $90 for two.

"We have not raised the price since I can remember," Saunders said. "We want to make sure as many kids who want to come to camp, can come to camp."

Athletes are asked to bring sneakers, shorts and their own beverage and snack to the camp.
