"There is no group more mythical than Faust," wrote biographer Julian Cope in his book Krautrocksampler

The self-ascribed "dadaist choir" formed in Wuume, Germany, in 1971 by producer/overseer Uwe Nettelback, a one-time music journalist. Founding members Hans Joachim Irmler, Jean-Hervé Péron, Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Rudolf Sosna, Gunther Wusthoff, and Armulf Meifert converted an old schoolhouse into a recording studio, where the group spent the first several months of its existence in almost total isolation before producing their debut, a stream-of-consciousness document of tape manipulation, drones, free-jazz, and inexplicable bombast.
