Happy April, Loyal reader. This month, we’re celebrating the linkages between two of Maine’s most popular befuddling agents — marijuana and beer.

The similarities between these substances transcend the confusing effect they have the central nervous system. In fact, the hop plant, which provides one of the most important flavor constituents in beer, is a close relative of the cannabis plant. Many of the chemicals in hops (terpenes, flavonoids, etc..) are also found in pot, which is source of similarities in flavors and aromas between the two plants. Some are even suspicious that these chemicals contribute to the unique buzz of a heavily hopped beer, leading to the possibility that hops and pot share at least some psychoactive effects. Without further ado, pass the chips, put on some Pink Floyd and pass the pot-inspired beer!
