Over the last three weeks, we've sampled pale ales from Maine. When I first embarked on a mission to explore this approachable style of beer, I was woefully ignorant about the profusion of pale ales we're lucky enough to enjoy that are brewed right here. But my thirst has been whetted, loyal reader, so expect more explorations of Maine pale ale in the future. This week, we'll journey to California, the western epicenter of the first micro-brew boom and the current home to some of the most innovative brewers in America. I'm curious to see if the proximity to some of the best hop cultivation areas in the world affects the flavor profiles of these western pale ales, compared to the Maine pales we've tasted so far. Only one way to find out — cheers!
