Often in the fall, as the peak of foliage moves south, I’ll often go to Bald Ledge (1,187 feet) in Porter. Maine. Although these foothills are low, the view south from the ledge out over the modest Colcord Pond, plus an 180-degree horizon of bumpy foothills, seems to embrace you as you enjoy the warm ledge.

There are two trails to the summit maintained by the Francis Small Heritage Trust: the older 0.7-mile Bald Ledge Trail from Varny Road, and the newer one-mile Colcord Trail from Colcord Pond Road. I’ve been on both, and went on the Colcord Trail with a friend last year.
