To the editor:

My husband thought he was being humane when he bought "cage free" eggs at the supermarket. These chickens are raised in tiered warehouses that are extremely crowded and dirty. They do not see sunlight or feel the earth beneath their feet.

I think I'll keep buying my eggs from the local guy down the road and take my chances.

Support the local economy and save on gas.

Thank you for offering guidance for all of us. I will be following your advice and will buy free range eggs. I WILL worry about cooped up chickens no matter how much I pay for gas and I do NOT care how high my grocery bill is. If it's too high, I just won't get eggs. Know that you can also mix eggs with tofu to make them go further.

With gas at nearly 5 bucks a gallon, I don't give a damn what the chickens go through to get cheap eggs.
