I’ve been somewhat taken aback by the recent rants of “Quddus Snyder, Ph.D.,” who has been excoriating a fellow Eaton resident for daring to fly a Confederate flag on the Fourth of July. It’s discouraging to see such arrogance and authoritarian sentiment expressed by the son of a man who was so gentle and self-effacing. I couldn’t imagine his father trying to herald his own virtue at the expense of a neighbor, which makes the son’s latest tirades all the more startling.

“Doc” Snyder’s vehemently dogmatic fulmination leaves me wondering if he isn’t trying to convince himself, or those around him, of a devotion that he doubts internally. Otherwise, he could have just knocked on the neighbor’s door and tried to explain his complaint. After all, he must be intimately acquainted with that neighbor, whose “bankrupt views” and “treasonous philosophy and racism” he was able to pinpoint and denounce.
