Scams targeting consumers continue to grow in both frequency and financial impact. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, while newer data shows losses tied to scams originating on social media reached $2.1 billion in 2025 alone. In Canada, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported more than $704 million in fraud losses in 2025, with investment fraud accounting for the largest share. From imposter schemes and online shopping fraud to increasingly sophisticated crypto and relationship scams, today’s fraud landscape is evolving rapidly—often leaving victims emotionally shaken as well as financially harmed.
