FRYEBURG — “We’re the only school in the world that is doing this,” said third-grader Watson Leach as he explained how he and his classmates have been learning about reading, writing, math, science and history while they also spent the year learning to farm.

The students are the first at the Molly Ockett School to participate in Christina Littlefield’s ABLE program — short for Agricultural Based Learning Environment — working on English as they follow recipes, science as they learn about the importance of weather in planting crops and math as they calculate the yield on their crops. Along the way, they also learned to cook a Thanksgiving feast, complete with pumpkin pie from pumpkins they raised themselves.
