CONWAY — Driving north on Route 16, heading toward North Conway Village, most of us are unaware we are passing the former home of one of the region’s most celebrated painters.

Just past the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort, on the right, is a sprawling two-story house with what looks like a barn attached. It is actually the onetime home and studio of Benjamin Champney (1817-1907).
