MADISON — A Superior Court judge ruled last week that the Madison Zoning Board of Adjustment cannot restrict the number of days that a grandfathered short-term rental can be rented. However, the judge rejected arguments from an STR owner who sought to have the court overturn a town ordinance that prohibits new STRs.
At press time, both the town and the Mt. Washington Valley Association for Responsible Rentals were digesting the ruling from Judge Michael Klass who presides over Land Court in Manchester.
STRs play a big roll for towns and STR owners. I do hope all residents of NH and Conway realize how much money from STRs are distributed from the Rooms & Meals Taxes. 2026 Distributions Total Allocation was $140,196,559.00. Conway was allocated 1,020,123.29. "Food for thought"
That is totally misleading numbers as the M&R tax include hotels, B&B, restaurants, as well as short term rentals. The funds are distributed based on population, so Conway may generate M&R revenue but the larger communities such as Nashua, Manchester and Concord receive the bulk of local allocations. Madison evaluated in 2023 the revenue generated by Madison based STR's and then the allocation amount from those Madison based STR to the Town of Madison. It was less than $300. You will find a large majority of the STR revenue does not stay local.
