CONWAY — The Conway Police Department warns there is a Craigslist scam taking place in the area.
They have recently investigated several cases where individuals have been scammed into paying for security deposits and first month’s rent on long-term rentals.
These transactions took place without individuals ever viewing the apartments/houses or meeting someone in person. The transactions were processed through mobile pay applications such as Zelle and Venmo.
“We have been able to track one of the scammers to an IP address in Nigeria,” said Sgt. Ryan Wallace. “We want to offer some advice to prospective tenants who are looking to rent an apartment/house through Craigslist.”
• Always meet in person before transferring any money.
• Consider the email address of the person that you are communicating with. If the email address is not associated with their name, that would be suspicious, said Wallace. For example, if someone purportedly named “Michael Jones” had an email address of “firstname.lastname@example.org,” which is an actual email address that Conway police believe to be associated with scams.
• Also consider it suspicious if they then ask you to send the money to a completely different email account through Zelle or Venmo
• If they are claiming to be the homeowner, use the Town of Conway’s online tax database at www.conwaynh.org and research their name or address of the property to verify.
