BROWNFIELD, Maine — Residents at a special town meeting next Thursday will need to approve $900,000 in payroll spending or else the town government shuts down July 1, said selectmen’s chair Ricky Emery on Tuesday, adding that the situation is unprecedented.

The special town meeting will take place at the Brownfield Community Center June 26 at 6 p.m. A warrant article asks for a total of $906,465, but selectmen propose also using $32,000 from health insurance reserves to offset the amount.
