I concur with the above comment in response to this interview concerning STRs. Both the Mgr & Asst Mgr grossly misrepresented the facts about the STR issue. As past president I reached out through town Counsel with an offer to meet and discuss the issue. They rejected the offer. I have the emails supporting this. I also reached out through Damon Steer to sit down with them in this forum and they rejected the offer. We could have saved the taxpayer many thousand dollars in litigation costs. Note how Paul D. admitted that they were following the “original law” rather than the most recent… an amateur mistake. We always simply insisted that they follow the law. Regardless as to how they want to spin the issue, I hope they learned their lesson.
Just to clarify some comments regarding The MWV Assoc. for Responsible Renters. They have always asked for a seat at the table to come up with reasonable rental regulations. Scott Kudrick (A founding member of the Association.) and Greydon Turner; local residential and commercial Realtor and past President of the White Mountain Board of Realtors, sat on the first ad hoc Selectmen's committee for regulating Short Term Rentals 9 years ago. After that first effort was shot down by the NH Supreme courts in Conway v. Kudrick. Association President David Cavanaugh and myself met with Paul D. for over 2.5 hours meeting in his office going point by point highlighting what was acceptable and what was illegal under NH law. He admits in this video, to us bringing him that information regarding hard wired smoke detectors, but seems to have forgotten the rest of the time we were "At The Table". He might want to refer to a two page letter we sent the Selectmen on July 24, 2023, outlining that meeting. Also members of the Association have attended dozens of Planning Board and Selectmen meetings over the last nine years respectfully commenting on plans and issues we agree with and challenge.
Our association has been open and clear that we do not oppose life safety requirements and quality of life issues, and have been very successful working with other towns. But, the violation of NH law regarding private property rights will continue to be an issue we will challenge and win in the courts. The Association submitted the petition articles because we believe that, even though our members can not vote, the majority of citizens in Conway are tired of municipal overrench, leading to endless lawsuits, that do nothing to improve quality of life here in our neighborhoods or create affordable housing.
On a personal note, I am not a Realtor and do not speak for or sit on the board of the renters' association. I sold Black Bear Realty over three years ago and gave up my seat on the Association board at the end of my first term.
