John Roy Filson was born Nov. 5, 1938, to Jane and Roy Filson in St. Joseph, Mo. He earned a bachelor of science degree in geology from Rice University in 1960.

As a U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant from 1960-63, he served as adjutant of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines.
