Howdy neighbor!

Well, I’d say it’s getting just about time now; we journey back to Fryeburg at the turning of the last century, and take a walk down Main Street just as September slips into October, right around this time of year we’d chance to see a rather curious sight. For in addition to the expected horses, carriages, buggies, and maybe even an early automobile or two, (this last likely driven by Mr. Horace Greeley Adams, who if I’m not mistaken was just about the first man in Fryeburg to own an automobile, and who never really figured out they lack the horse-sense to turn automatically with the road when they ought to!) we’d also find beside Main Street a pair of thin iron rails leading off toward Lovell; and were to wait long enough beside these tracks, in time there’d come over the horizon the figure of a lone, pale grey horse, riderless, head down, breathing steadily, hauling up those tracks an old-fashioned trolley car. For in Fryeburg between 1887 and 1912, right on Main Street, six times a day, the Fryeburg Horse Railroad made its daily rides, hauling on average somewhere north of 10,000 passengers a year.
