Hello fellow Berlinites. Young Ricky Rivard bagged his first, but I do not know if it would be his last black bear on Thursday, September 1, 1977. Bear season opened and closed very quickly for this 16-year-old Berlin teenager, when he shot the 110 pound bear on the first day of the season in Shelburne.

Ricky, along with Steve Bisson, both seniors at BHS, began that day very early and shortly after dawn they were stalking the woods of Shelburne. Almost an hour had passed by before Ricky had noticed a bear lumbering across a set of railroad tracks. He raised 30-30, fired, but missed.
