WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has written to U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar urging him to support funding the program that compensates communities that host national wildlife refuges, such as the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, for lost property tax revenues.  The federal government does not pay property taxes but provides host towns with revenue sharing funds.

The towns of Errol and Upton, Maine as well as the unincorporated place of Wentworth Location, have complained that they are not fully compensated for property taxes lost because of the refuge.
