Bob Danderson was in his first term as mayor when the region’s largest employer filed for bankruptcy. In the spring of 2001, Pulp and Paper of America began having trouble paying its bills.

Danderson said he called U.S. Senator Judd Gregg’s office and expressed concern. The city was owed over $6 million in property taxes, water, and sewer fees.
