Former U.S. Rep. John Delaney got off to an early start, becoming the first Democrat to announce a run for president back in July 2017, when he said he would not run for re-election to the House. With a background as a businessman and entrepreneur, the Maryland Democrat spoke about the loss of jobs and population in rural areas. Delaney told the small gathering at the Northland Restaurant that he has heard Berlin’s story all across the country. He said he proposed direct deferral investment in those communities left behind in the recent economic upswing. Delaney said restoring bipartisanship would also be a focus of his administration. The son of an electrician, he said scholarships allowed him to go to Columbia University and Georgetown University. Delaney said he would refigure the country’s education system to guarantee free access from pre-kindergarten to two years of post-secondary education for all.
