BERLIN — The collapse of the Notre Dame Arena roof came during what has become known as the 100-hour snowstorm. The week from Feb. 22-28, 1969, marked one of the longer snowstorms in recorded history across New England according to the website “This Day in Weather History.”

The Berlin Reporter newspaper said snow in the city began falling on Feb. 24, and when it ended on Feb. 27, 5 feet of snow had fallen on Berlin. Overall, the region had received 210 inches of snow since Nov. 6 (By comparison, Great Glen and Wildcat ski areas this week reported about 150 inches of snow so far this winter).
