Cleaner operating diesel locomotives, smoother riding coaches, passing lanes and new automatic switches, debris pickup, and ongoing upgrades within the Base Station have drawn an increasing number of visitors every year to the Cog Railway. This has helped compensate for the fall-off in visitors stopping in Franconia Notch since the Old Man in the Mountains fell in 2003 nearly 16 years ago. (EDITH TUCKER FILE PHOTO)

SARGENT’S PURCHASE — Wayne Presby, president of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, filed an application with the Coos County Planning Board to restore about 110 feet of track and platform closer to its original location on the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington.
The planning board has scheduled a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at the county nursing home in Berlin to review the application for completeness, according to chairman John Scarinza. “If deemed complete, a public hearing will be set at a future date to be determined,” he explained in an email exchange.
