Council agrees to ban mineral collecting on Mt. Jasper easement area

BERLIN – A visit from the state archaeologist Monday night convinced the city council to ban hobby mineral collecting on the Mt. Jasper easement area.

Back in 2008, the city put an easement on 27 acres around the Dead River as mitigation for the proposed Greenova wood pellet plant. The Greenova project, which was never built, would have impacted 2.5 acres of wetlands at the city’s industrial park. The state Department of Resources and Economic Development agreed to hold the easement for the city.
