Visits to the famous landmark for an ice cream on a hot summer evening or dining on the restaurant's excellent cuisine on Sunday was a much anticipated treat. That all changed Saturday afternoon when flames consumed the establishment that was so much a part of everyone's lives, not only those of local people, but visitors from afar who had discovered what one patron called "one of the North Country's treasures".
Owners Pete and Joanne Roy, the restaurant's staff and it patrons looked on in shock as the raging inferno that began shortly before 1 p.m. ravaged the building. The fire apparently broke out in the kitchen and spread quickly. Two of the establishment's three dining rooms were open at the time and the owners and staff rushed to get customers to safety. When Berlin firefighters arrived they discovered heavy smoke billowing from the building and flames shooting 30 to 40 feet in the air.
