The house I lived in from age eight to 18 is up for sale again. It’s a strange experience to look at the pictures in the listing and see how different it looks than it did the last time I saw it — how much better it looks, truly. It’s not a super-old house, built in the heart of the 1960s. When we lived there, there was a lot of original or near-original stuff that was a part of it. I remember the kitchen, specifically, had some original appliances and definitely original countertops and floors. I will never forget the pea-green vinyl kitchen floor and barely functioning coppertone dishwasher.
It’s not that I assumed it would look the same as it once did when I found it on Zillow, but I was still surprised to see it look so different. I’d pause on each picture as I scrolled and realized what room I was looking at. A few of them were nearly unrecognizable, in a good way. The more I looked, the more it became clear that almost everything remained in its original form, just with updates. For example, the kitchen was laid out exactly as I remember it, but the countertops, floors, and appliances were all new. Structurally, the house is exactly the same, but aesthetically it’s completely changed for the better.
