Black is back. Under the direction of new owner, president and general manager Erik Mogensen, 38, the state’s oldest lift-serviced ski area has been transformed from a sleepy and almost closed failure into a record-setting comeback winner, becoming the biggest story in New England skiing this year.

Mogensen has a national following in the ski industry and is considered a bit of a maverick. He is the owner of Entabeni Systems, a Colorado-based technology company he founded in 2016. The company’s sole purpose is to support independently owned ski areas so they have a fighting chance to compete against the large corporate-owned operators that have dominated skiing over the past three decades.
