Earlier this summer, I sampled beers with added fruit and berry flavors. Now, during the dog days of summer, I'm sipping beers with added lime flavors. I've always found lime to be the cleanest and most refreshing of all the fruit flavors. Perhaps it's because the flavor of lime is such a mix of sweet, sour, fragrant and earthy. Perhaps, it's because one of the major flavor constituents of limes, ascorbic acid, also known as Vitamin C, helps prevent scurvy, a devastating nutritional deficiency whose symptoms include loose teeth, bleeding gums, bruising and general malaise. At least, that's what I tell myself, that I’m not merely refreshing myself, that I’m fighting scurvy with every sip.
