Fryeburg Fairground fire

Fire spread quickly through the sheep and beef cattle barns after being sparked by an electrical short, struck the Fryeburg Fairgrounds on July 10. Most viewers of TV news are familiar with the expression “if it bleeds it ledes.” TV producers long have known that sensational stories, usually involving accidents or shootings, are the most popular, and popularity leads to ratings.

Journalists at newspapers consider themselves purveyors of “serious” and “important” news, and readers of legacy media like The New York Times know they are more likely to find stories that are political or analytical rather than salacious or grisly.
