lovell butterfly

FROM Lovell to Mexico, it was quite a journey for this Monarch butterfly.

LOVELL — For three years, the Greater Lovell Land Trust (GLLT) has participated in the annual Monarch Watch tagging program. This international program is dedicated to a mark-and-recapture study of the monarch butterfly’s fall migration from the continental United States to overwintering sites in Mexico.

This month, GLLT’s Community Engagement Manager, Lizzy Echard, received the exciting news that a monarch that had been tagged by GLLT was found in the El Rosario Sanctuary in Mexico on Feb. 4, 2026. This particular monarch (AJLX215), a female that was found as a caterpillar in the GLLT pollinator garden and raised by staff, was tagged on Sept. 16, 2024. Yes, you read that right: 2024.
