Howdy neighbor! By the time we go to print, our local election will have come and gone. Who can say how the parties will fare, or how much wailing and gnashing of teeth will accompany the final announcement, whenever it comes out. I’ll say this much, however this whole mess ends up shaking out, I do think it’s incumbent on state officials to have Maine’s vote tabulated just as soon as they can, no matter how late they have to stay up Tuesday night to do it. After our last election, I don’t think any of us can endure extended weeks of uncertain recounts. If all our modern electronic infrastructure means anything in the way of real progress, then we ought to at least be able to know who we’re sending to Washington quicker today than we did in the 1800s. Knowing our local election staff very well indeed, I have full confidence that Bridgton will have our totals tabulated well before sunrise on Wednesday — and I’d wager the likes of Fryeburg, Minot, Stow, Greenville, and in all likelihood all the rest of Maine’s small towns will as well.

The best part of our state will have their counts done by Wednesday morning; it’s those bigger burgs we ought to keep an eye on. It will remain to see how fast the likes of Portland, Biddeford, Lewiston and Bangor can get their houses in order. Just another benefit of living in a small town, as far as I’m concerned.
