Howdy neighbor! This week, in a continuance of our hard-hitting, only 250-year-late coverage of our ongoing war for Independence from Great Britain, we’ll be discussing the thrilling scenes of the Battle of White Plains, which took place at White Plains, New York on Oct. 28, 1776.
Last year, we addressed the opening battles of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, Benedict Arnold’s Raid on Quebec and the Burning of Falmouth, ending our formal coverage this year back in March with the Siege of Boston, as seen through the eyes of local men who played a role in winning our nation’s freedom. Since we left the war in March, our American forces had just won a landmark victory over the British. General Washington’s forces, some of which were led by newly-gazetted Brigadier General Joseph Frye, had driven the British to evacuate the city of Boston through a marvelous show of force, assisted largely by that noble train of artillery lately hauled down from Fort Ticonderoga by the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont. Since the withdrawal of the British to sea and the liberation of Boston, the redcoats rallied that summer on Long Island, taking command of New York City and its surrounding country under General William Howe. Landing unopposed on Staten Island on the 3rd of July, whilst we were busy Declaring our Independence the British forces — joined by newly landed German mercenary Hessians — had firmly entrenched themselves in New York, becoming so established that when Washington finally landed on Long Island in August, our army was unable to drive them out.
