Lydia McKenzie: Crossing Guard’s actions prevented major loss

Just wanted to let you know about an incident Friday, Sept. 13, at the corner of Hillside Avenue and Willard Street involving a Crossing Guard. The gentleman (I don't know his name) heard the smoke detectors in my Willard Street home go off shortly after I left for work, and promptly flagged down a Berlin Police Department officer. His quick action resulted in a small kitchen fire being detected and extinguished before anything more than smoke damage. There were four puppies and a cat in the upstairs of the home whose lives were saved by this Crossing Guard.
