Ralph Irving Peabody (RIP) was the third child of Roswell and Mary Jane Peabody. He went to school at one of the several neighborhood schools of the time but school had only two terms of six weeks. One was in the spring and one was in the fall. Summers were for working on the farm and winters for helping with wood and chores. By his own account in his memoir “Make Your Own Fun,” he was a prankster and an indifferent student.
Ralph loved horses and oxen, and as a youngster, trained both. From his teens, he earned money as a teamster hauling logs, hay, lumber etc. and even delivering milk in Berlin for a while. He was head teamster for John Bennet, owner of several businesses in Gilead for many years and also branched out into sheep shearing, veterinary work and even barbering.
