The calendar may indicate that it is closing in on the middle of December, and Christmas Day is not far away. But it is not Christmas that is on my mind. Next Saturday afternoon, I am to do a New Year's program for the public library in Lowell, Massachusetts. The program is to be a selection of songs, poems, stories, and other writings about, or appropriate for, the new year.

The choices are of particular importance this year, I think, given the many unknowns that lie ahead of us.
