A majority of speakers at Thursday’s budget hearing urged the city council to make additional cuts to avoid a tax increase. But many also praised the council for the job it has done in a tough budget cycle.

The mayor and council presented a proposed fiscal 2009 general fund budget of $31.6 million. The budget is up $702,575 or 2.2 percent over the current budget. If approved, the budget would result in an estimated $1.43 increase in the property tax rate of $30.07.
