Beto O’Rourke made an unadvertised stop at the White Mountain Cafe for a session with about a dozen local activists and a local reporter. He pulled up to the cafe behind the wheel of a minivan with no sign of the huge press group following him on his 24-hour visit to the state less than a week after he announced he was running. Sleeves rolled up, notebook in hand, O’Rourke asked as many, if not more, questions than he answered as he sought to learn about the problems facing northern New Hampshire. He listened, shared similar stories about rural areas in his native Texas, and spent about an hour. His purpose, he said, was to hear from North Country residents. He heard that people are upset over the high cost of prescription drugs, the lack of good paying jobs, the high rate of poverty, the migration of the region’s young people, and the lack of inpatient beds of metal health patients.
