JEFFERSON — Why did the Eastern White Pine play such an oversized role in the founding of our country? American colonists bitterly opposed the King’s Broad Arrow Policy of 1691, which reserved white pine for masts for the Royal Navy in New Hampshire and Maine. This led to the Pine Tree Riot in Weare in 1772, one of the first significant acts of resistance against the King of England, and it inspired the Boston Tea Party.

The program examines the natural history of the Eastern White Pine and how this tree became such a strategic military necessity. The Pine Tree Riot was followed by a similar incident in Falmouth (Portland), Maine, that prompted the British to bombard the city and impose the Intolerable Acts, which led to the American Revolution.
