COOS COUNTY -- Nationally, 35 percent of American children entering kindergarten today lack the basic language skills they will need to learn to read, and children from economically disadvantaged families are especially at risk. However, research shows that children who are read aloud to from an early age are more likely to have higher scores on language measures in elementary school.

Under the leadership of the Coos Family Support Project, the three major health clinics in Coos County are working together to encourage early literacy for families in Coos County through the Reach Out and Read program. The medical offices, including Coos County Family Health Services, Weeks Medical Center and Indian Stream Health Center are addressing the literacy deficit to improve early learning and school success.
