WASHINGTON D.C. — The U.S. Senate voted to send to the president’s desk the Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act, bipartisan legislation Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) cosponsored that is aimed at reducing the high suicide rate among veterans.

The bill directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to evaluate the Suicide Prevention Coordinators program, looking at staffing shortages and the workload of the coordinators. These coordinators are responsible for an array of suicide prevention activities at the VA, including counseling, identifying high-risk veterans, conducting outreach, and promoting awareness of veteran suicide.
