I am not much of a gardener; I don’t have any particular desire to tend to plants, let alone dig in the dirt or be surrounded by bugs — flying or otherwise. My mom, however, loves to garden and is really, really good at it; she always has been. I don’t know how or where she learned this skill because it didn’t come from either of her parents. In fact, when I was a kid, we’d visit my grandparents sometimes just so she could spend a few days creating and tending to their gardens.
A few years ago, she created gardens at my house. They are fairly overgrown now because I don’t do anything to or for them. Yet, they still bloom despite their desperate need for weeding. And my mom, being my mom, planted perennials that pop up all throughout the season so there’s always something new to enjoy in a sequence. Early on I see the poppies, then the irises, then the daylilies. Right now there are some phlox and an abundance of bee balm, which has reseeded itself and popped up everywhere.
