Sally Manikian and her sled-team

Sally Manikian, of Shelburne, closed out the mushing racing season with the Can Am Crown 250-mile dogsled race in Fort Kent, Maine, finishing 9th out of 17 teams. Teams travel from across the country and Canada to compete in what is the longest race in New England. The race course goes through Irving Woodlands timberland, and is full of challenging hills and terrain. It is a remote wilderness race, and teams travel through the night with very little rest- Manikian herself got about five total hours of sleep in 50 hours. Manikian also competed in two other races this season, the Eagle Lake 100 (placing 4th) and the Plum Creek Wilderness 60 (placing 3rd). She has been training her team since the first week of September, and even though the race season is over will be training until the snow is gone. Manikian has a kennel of 22 dogs, including puppies and retirees. (Photo by Bruce Kimball).
