Marian Barton Olds Precht died aged 94 on September 2, 2026, in Washington, DC. She was born on November 18, 1931, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the eldest child of Dorris Marian Lavanture Olds and Brig. Gen Thayer (Sam) Stevens Olds. Marian listed 36 addresses throughout her life — 30 before she was 45. At her graduation from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Va., in 1948, she delivered an address on the theme of “One World.” She then entered Middlebury College, where she made lifelong friends; she graduated in 1952 with a B.A. in American Studies. Afterwards, Marian attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education, earning an Ed.M.
She began her career as an educator in Department of Defense Dependents Schools, first in London, England and then in Naples, Italy. It was in Naples that she met Henry Precht, and they were married in June 1958 after they had settled in Washington, DC. She taught grades 3 and 4 in the Arlington, Va., public schools until their daughter Katherine was born. Son Paul followed two years later. By 1962, Henry had joined the Foreign Service, and the family moved to Rome, the start of three decades of international postings: Alexandria, Egypt; Port Louis, Mauritius; Tehran, Iran; and Cairo, Egypt.
