Ah, how sweet the breeze this past weekend! Did you smell it? Wafting over from the vicinity of Casco it was; no not woodsmoke, nor even the bracing aroma of fresh cut pine from Hancock’s mill, this was something grander still. Something I hadn’t smelled in a while. It was cinnamon, and hot oil, and sugar melting down to syrup, yes indeed it was fried dough, and that sort of smell could only mean one thing. Casco Days had come again. Starting last Thursday, one of our oldest local examples of that once ubiquitous ‘Old Home Days’ tradition kicked off its 90th year, when as they have done since 1935 the people of Casco held high carnival to make the village ring with excitement from the placid shores of Pleasant Lake to Mayberry Hill beyond.
